Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat cells beneath the skin in order to reshape specific areas of your body and can be performed nearly anywhere on the body, but it has proven particularly effective in the abdomen, waist, back, hips, and thighs. It may also be performed on the neck, arms, buttocks and knees. Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic plastic surgery procedures at Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center and is suitable for both men and women who are in good general health.
When diet and exercise alone are not producing the desired results, you may consider liposuction to aid in the elimination of excess pockets of fat in stubborn areas. It is important to remember that liposuction is not a primary treatment for obesity.
Dr. Michael Thornton uses a traditional tumescent liposuction technique called suction assisted liposuction (SAL), whereby a small cannula is inserted through small ports made in your skin and attached to a suction machine. The fat is permanently removed using a gentle back and forth motion, but to maintain safety of the procedure, there is a limit on how much fat can be removed during one session. Elastic garments are worn for up to four weeks and strenuous physical activity is restricted to aid in healing, however, most clients are able to engage in light activity the day after surgery.
A more advanced form of liposuction is Power Assisted Liposuction PAL, whereby a specialized hand piece using a reciprocating motion facilitates the movement of the cannula within the fat tissue. This form of liposuction reduces the amount of manual force and physical effort especially in fibrous areas or scar tissue. The result is a better experience for both the surgeon and the patient. Dr. Thornton predominately uses the MicroAire PAL-650 LipoSculptor device for the majority of his lipoabdominoplasty, Brazilian butt lift and mommy make over procedures.
Laser assisted liposuction is considered an evolution in technology because it is minimally-invasive and requires only local anesthesia. Using the Lipotherme™ technology platform, we perform laser assisted liposuction in our office using minimal sedation. During your consultation, Dr. Thornton will make sure you are a proper candidate because the laser is better suited for smaller, more targeted body zones.
Skin irregularities and dimpling present before any liposuction procedure are likely to remain after the procedure. Unfortunately, while improving the overall shape of your body, it does not remove or improve the appearance of cellulite. Nonetheless, the results are often amazing and satisfying for our female and male clients. Because our clients heal differently, it may take up to six months or longer to achieve your final result.
What can I expect during my consultation?
During your consultation, you will meet privately and exclusively with Dr. Michael Thornton where you will collectively share in the decision making process about your personal needs, desires, and expectations. Although well qualified, we choose not use patient coordinators, nurse practitioners, or physicians assistants to perform your consultation. Dr. Thornton will complete a thorough medical history and perform a careful examination, including the location of fat deposits and the quality of your skin. The extent of liposuction depends on the amount of fat deposits and the number of areas treated. Liposuction body contouring surgery is not recommended for all clients and this determination will be made on an individual basis.
Where will my surgery take place?
Large volume procedures are performed at Baylor Surgicare at Mansfield, a AAAHC certified out-patient surgery center, located in Mansfield, Texas. On average, the procedure will take 3 – 4 hours to complete, depending upon the complexity of the case and the number of body zones treated. Furthermore, all large volume procedures are performed using general anesthesia as provided by board-certified anesthesiologists. However, small volume and Lipotherme laser procedures may be performed in our office using oral sedation and local tumescent anesthesia.
