Liposuction or body contouring permanently removes fat cells beneath the skin in order to reshape specific areas of your body and can be performed nearly anywhere on the body, but it has proven particularly effective in the abdomen, waist, back, hips, and thighs. It may also be performed on the arms, buttocks and knees.  Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures and is suitable for both men and women who are in good general health. 

When diet and exercise alone are not producing the desired results, you may consider liposuction to aid in the elimination of excess pockets of fat in stubborn areas. It is important to remember that liposuction is not a primary treatment for obesity.  Furthermore, if weight gain occurs following liposuction, the fat will be deposited in areas that have not been treated.

Liposuction is well suited to be performed in an outpatient surgical facility. The surgery is performed with either IV monitored anesthesia or general anesthesia depending on the areas treated and whether you are undergoing additional cosmetic surgery procedures at the same time.  Dr. Michael Thornton uses a traditional tumescent liposuction technique called suction assisted liposuction (SAL), whereby a liposuction cannula is inserted through discrete ports made in your skin and attached to a suction machine. The fat is permanently removed using a gentle back and forth motion, but to maintain safety of the procedure, there is a limit on how much fat can be removed during one session.  Elastic garments are worn for up to four weeks following the liposuction procedure and strenuous physical activity is restricted to aid in healing, however, most clients are able to engage in light activity the day after surgery. 

Skin irregularities and dimpling present before the liposuction procedure are likely to remain after the procedure.  Unfortunately, while improving the overall shape of your body, the liposuction procedure does not remove or improve the appearance of cellulite.  Nonetheless, the results of liposuction are often amazing and satisfying for our female and male clients.  Because our clients heal differently, it may take up to six months or longer to achieve your final result.
