Chemical peel involves the application of a chemical solution to peel away the top layers of the skin.  During the healing process, the top cell layer is replaced with a fresh new skin surface.  Chemical peels can erase, fade or reduce fine facial lines and remove other skin imperfections.  The cosmetic result is a more healthy, vibrant, and even skin appearance.

Men and women of all ages can benefit from a chemical peel.  However, the best candidates are individuals with fair skin that has a tendency toward fine wrinkling, whereas darker skin individuals run the risk of developing hypopigmenation and/or scarring.  A variety of chemical solutions can be used to produce peels of varying depths of the dermis, usually medium to deep.  The outcome of the peel is dependent upon the chemical solution and the applied technique. A medium or deep chemical peel is always performed and monitored by a physician, whereby Dr. Michael Thornton personally applies the chemical solution, usually 88% phenol, but he may also use higher concentrations of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and resorcinol.  Some peels can be repeated on a regular basis to maintain a fresh, smooth skin.

Most clients experience a light burning sensation that quickly subsides and the procedure usually takes a few minutes to perform.  Dr. Michael Thornton will prescribe a specific pre and post procedure skin care regimen based upon your skin type and the applied chemical solution.  Some redness and swelling may occur but should resolve within a few days.  Most clients resume normal activities within one to seven days.  Care should be taken to avoid direct sunlight and to always wear sunscreen.

You will enjoy the tighter, smoother skin resulting from a chemical peel.  You may feel the slight inconvenience is a small price to pay for younger and vibrant looking skin.
