Otoplasty is usually performed during childhood, before the child begins school. The ears usually reach about 85 to 90 percent of their adult size by age six, so the earlier the surgery, the less teasing and embarrassment the child will endure. While ear enhancement is more common among children, an increasing number of adults are also beginning to desire cosmetic ear enhancement to compliment their appearance. In addition, clients undergoing a facelift procedure may request an earlobe reduction to improve the balance and symmetry of their face, while others may request repair of torn earlobes or removal of earlobe keloid scars.

Children who feel uncomfortable about their ears and desire surgery are usually more cooperative during the process and happier with the overall outcome.
