DYSPORT, the Botox® alternative is finally here!
By now you may have heard of Dysport®, as some are calling it the ALTERNTIVE to Botox®, or the NEW Botox®? Because the word out is that Dysport® lasts longer than Botox® and has a quicker onset (usually within 24-48 hours) many of our patients are requesting Dysport® over Botox®.
Although DYSPORT has been available in Europe for many years, it has been recently released as a direct competitor to Botox® in the U.S. and approved by the FDA for the temporary treatment of glabellar lines and wrinkles.
What is the difference between Botox® and Dysport®?
Both products contain the purified form of a neurotoxin, botulinum toxin A, that works by temporarily paralyzing targeted facial muscles. However, these products are manufactured by two entirely separate companies, as Botox® is produced by Allergan (the makers of Juvederm®) and Dysport is produced by Medicis (the makers of Restylane® and Perlane®. In comparison to Botox®, the Dysport® botulinum toxin A protein has been engineered slightly smaller than the botulinum toxin A protein found in Botox®. Because the neurotoxin protein is smaller, it works faster so our patients are seeing quicker results with Dysport®...some patients have even reported seeing results within 24 to 48 hours. In comparison, patients who receive Botox® typically see results in 5-7 days.
Can I receive Dysport® if I had Botox® in the past?
Yes. If you have received Botox® in the past, it is best to wait until the Botox® has completely warn off and your wrinkles and lines have reappeared. Unless you have developed an allergy or direct adverse reaction to Botox®, there should be no problem in receiving Dysport®.
I have heard that I can't receive Dysport® if I am allergic to cow's milk?
Yes, this is true. During the manufacturing process of Dysport®, it may contain trace amounts of cow's milk protein. Unfortunately, if you have a true allergy to cow's milk then you are not a candidate for Dysport®, but you may receive Botox® instead.
I have also heard that Dysport® lasts longer than Botox®?
Although both products typically last 3-4 months on average, Dysport® has been reported to last slightly longer in some patients but overall there is not a noticeable or considerable difference.
Is it true that Dysport® is cheaper than Botox®?
Yes, Dysport® is cheaper than Botox®, at least for now. The price difference isn't huge but every little bit helps our clients. Physicians are able to purchase Dysport® at a lower price per unit dose as compared to Botox®. So, we are able to pass along this cost savings directly to our patients. In addition, for a limited time (until Jan 1, 2010), Medicis Corporation, the maker of Dysport® is offering a $75 manufacturer rebate. After your Dysport® session, we complete all the paper work and mail it in for you. In about 3-6 weeks you will receive your rebate check in the mail. It's that easy!
