Following abdominal surgery, gallbladder surgery, c-sections, or bariatric surgery, the muscles and protective fascia of the abdominal wall may thin and separate, thus causing various forms of abdominal hernias to develop. Medical insurance will cover the cost of incisional hernia, ventral hernia, groin hernia, inguinal hernia, and umbilical repair. Dr. Thornton accepts Medicare and all major medical insurance network plans for hernia repair surgery.
Hernia repair is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, but on occasion and depending on the complexity of your hernia, you may require a brief hospital stay. As triple-board certified in general surgery, trauma / critical care surgery, and cosmetic surgery, Dr. Michael Thornton has acquired advanced operative experience in the treatment and repair of abdominal hernias, as well as complex abdominal wall hernias. He has advanced fellowship training in trauma surgery from the University of Maryland, R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he learned sophisticated techniques of complex abdominal wall repair. Using advanced surgical methods of component separation, Rives-Stoppa hernia repair, and through the application of AlloDerm ®, Stattice®, and FlexHD® acellular biological mesh materials, reconstruction of the abdominal wall can be accomplished with greater success.
