Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat cells beneath the skin in order to reshape specific areas of your body. Liposuction can be performed nearly anywhere on the body, but it has proven particularly effective in the abdomen, waist, back, hips, and thighs. It may also be performed on the neck, arms, buttocks and knees. Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic plastic surgery procedures at Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center and is suitable for both men and women who are in good general health.
When diet and exercise alone are not producing the desired results, you may consider liposuction to aid in the elimination of excess pockets of fat in stubborn areas. It is important to remember that liposuction is not a primary treatment for obesity. Furthermore, if weight gain occurs following liposuction, obesity will be only return in areas that have not been treated with liposuction.
Dr. Michael Thornton uses a traditional tumescent liposuction technique called suction assisted liposuction (SAL), whereby a liposuction cannula is inserted through small ports made in your skin and attached to a suction machine. The fat is permanently removed using a gentle back and forth motion, but to maintain safety of the procedure, there is a limit on how much fat can be removed during one session. Elastic garments are worn for up to four weeks following the liposuction procedure and strenuous physical activity is restricted to aid in healing, however, most clients are able to engage in light activity the day after surgery.
A more advanced form of liposuction is Power Assisted Liposuction PAL, whereby liposuction is performed with a specialized handpiece using a reciprocating motion to facilitate the movement of the liposuction cannula within the fat tissue. Power assisted liposuction reduces the amount of manual force and physical effort required to perform effective liposuction, especially in fibrous areas or areas of previous liposuction. The result is a better experience for both the surgeon and the patient. Dr. Thornton uses the MicroAire PAL-650 LipoSculptor device, the latest in power assisted liposuction technology.
Laser assisted liposuction is considered an evolution in liposuction technology because it is minimally-invasive and requires only local anesthesia. Using the Lipotherme™ technology platform, we perform laser assisted liposuction in our office using minimal sedation. During your consultation, Dr. Thornton will make sure you are a proper candidate because laser liposuction is better suited for smaller, more targeted body zones.
Skin irregularities and dimpling present before any liposuction procedure are likely to remain after the procedure. Unfortunately, while improving the overall shape of your body, liposuction does not remove or improve the appearance of cellulite. Nonetheless, the results of liposuction are often amazing and satisfying for our female and male clients. Because our clients heal differently, it may take up to six months or longer to achieve your final result.
Consultations are complimentary at Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center. We happily perform liposuction body contouring surgery on clients from across the DFW Metroplex including, Mansfield, Fort Worth, Arlington, Dallas, Kennedale, Grand Prairie, Burleson, Corsicana, Ennis, Midlothian, Red Oak, Waxahachie, Corsicana, Duncanville, DeSoto Plano, and Tyler, Texas.
What can I expect during my consultation?
During your consultation, you will meet privately and exclusively with Dr. Michael Thornton where you will collectively share in the decision making process about your personal needs, desires, and expectations. Although well qualified, we choose not use patient coordinators, nurse practitioners, or physicians assistants to perform your consultation. Dr. Thornton will complete a thorough medical history and perform a careful examination, including the location of fat deposits and the quality of your skin. The extent of liposuction depends on the amount of fat deposits and the number of areas treated. Liposuction body contouring surgery is not recommended for all clients and this determination will be made on an individual basis.
Where will my surgery take place?
Large volume liposuction procedures are performed at Baylor Surgicare at Mansfield, a AAAHC certified out-patient surgery center, located in Mansfield, Texas. On average, the procedure will take 3 – 4 hours to complete, depending upon the complexity of the case and the number of body zones treated. Furthermore, all large volume liposuction procedures are performed using general anesthesia as provided by board-certified anesthesiologists. However, small volume liposuction and Lipotherme laser assisted liposuction will be performed in our office using oral and local sedation.
