How does fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing work?

As a person ages, collagen levels decline leading to the breakdown of the skin’s underlying support.  This breakdown of collagen along with daily exposure to the sun causes premature aging, discoloration, and wrinkles.  Fractional CO2 laser treatments may reverse these signs of aging by resurfacing the epidermis and portions of the dermis and stimulating the formation of new collagen and skin.

How do I know if I am a candidate for CO2 laser skin resurfacing?

If your skin is showing signs of aging with wrinkles, “smoker lines”, chicken pox scars, acne scars, blotchy skin, freckles, or brown spots then you may be considered a candidate for fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing.  During your consultation, Dr. Michael Thornton will personally discuss your options and determine if your are an acceptable candidate to undergo safe CO2 laser skin resurfacing.  Laser skin resurfacing is not for everyone especially patients with dark colored skin.  Under these circumstances, Dr. Thornton may offer alternative techniques in skin resurfacing, including chemical peels or prescription skin care products.

What does the CO2 laser treatment feel like?

Treatment sensations vary from person to person. During the procedure, tiny pulses of laser energy are delivered to the skin and most patients will experience a warm sharp feeling. Dr. Thornton reduces the discomfort by applying topical anesthesia cream, performing local nerve blocks, and prescribing oral sedation medication before the procedure begins. Any redness, swelling, and skin peeling that occurs is typically gone within a week, but may last up to several weeks depending upon the level of treatment.  The Matrix Fractional CO2 platform is designed in such a way that Dr. Thornton has precise control over the intensity and depth of the treatment, thus accelerating the healing process.

How many CO2 laser treatments are required?

Results vary with each patient. Most patients are satisfied following a single treatment, but in some cases a series of treatments may be required to achieve desired results.  Repeat treatments are usually spaced between 6-8 weeks.

How long do the results last?

This varies from person to person. However, if you take steps to protect your freshly rejuvenated skin, including the use of sunscreen, facial cleansers and prescription skin care, your results may last several years.
